What Good Drainage Looks Like
Gutters and downspouts collect roof runoff and carry it away from the building. Building science guidance recommends that gutters slope at least 1/16 inch per foot of run (about 5 millimetres per metre), and that downspouts discharge at least 5 feet (about 1.5 metres) from the foundation. Roof water that is not carried away can saturate the soil and wick through the foundation into the interior, which can lead to mould and rot.
Gutters In Winter
In cold climates, water left in a gutter can freeze, and snow in the gutter can become part of an ice dam. Keeping gutters clean before winter helps them drain. Our winter checklist walks through what to check before the snow arrives.
Gutters And Wildfire
FireSmart BC recommends non-combustible gutters and downspouts, such as galvanized steel, copper and aluminum, and says debris in gutters can ignite, so they should be cleaned regularly. Leaf guards or metal screening can reduce debris buildup.
