Vented Soffits And Your Attic
Vented soffits have small holes, slots or screened strips that let air into the attic. The air enters at the eaves and leaves at the ridge. If the vents are blocked, often by insulation pushed into the eaves, that airflow stops. Blocked soffits are a leading cause of ice dams and attic condensation. Aluminum and vinyl are the most common soffit materials because they do not rot and need little upkeep, and airflow matters more than which material you choose.
Soffits And Wildfire
FireSmart BC says soffit vents can pull embers in during a wildfire. It recommends screened vents, either 3 millimetre non-combustible screening or ASTM fire rated vents, and boxed in eaves instead of open ones.
